The primary focus of the method is to create a visualisation of a knowledge structure that is held by human experts. The visualisation is intended to facilitate discussion through a common representation, allowing decisions to be taken about the human based knowledge resource in a way that reduces misunderstanding within the group that is discussing the resource. The organisation of the map is based on human knowledge acquisition.
